“Glass Ceiling” is a commissioned piece was a collective effort of three local artists and honors the late Evelyn Gandy, known for her pioneering and collaborative path in Mississippi politics. The project was completed in a partnership between HAPA, the 19th Amendment Committee, and 2024 Gandy Leadership Academy. In addition to many local and state roles, Gandy served as Lieutenant Governor of Mississippi from 1976 to 1980. As the first woman elected to a statewide office in Mississippi, she broke the glass ceiling for many who came after her.

Daylily Destination

Titled ‘Daylily Destination,’ the mural celebrates Hattiesburg’s official flower – the daylily. In 2008, Hattiesburg City Council adopted the daylily as the city’s flower, and a decade later Hattiesburg was the first city in the nation to be given the designation as a “Daylily City” by the American Daylily Society. Designed and painted by Hattiesburg native Kym Garraway, the bright artwork features various species of daylilies as well as monarch butterflies. Marking the city’s 37th large-scale mural, it is also HAPA’s first project to be completed on metal.
