Blooming Death

Hector Boldo

This utility box located at Hardy St. and 34th St. is based on “El Dia de los Muertos;” a Mexican tradition that has been around for centuries. On November 1 and 2, people await the return of their deceased family members and prepare an offering with food, drinks, sugar skulls or cigarettes; depending on what the person ate, drank, or did while they were alive. Part of the tradition is visiting their gravestones and decorating it with beautiful flowers for the deceased to see. This particular piece entails the whole tradition into one; the iconic sugar skull from the offering and the flowers used to decorate their gravestone.

other, which serves as a signifier for open discourse in our society. The limited color palette and dynamic color contrasts represent differing points of view between the two characters.
